Age spots, also known as liver or sun spots, are small, flat, and darkened areas of the skin that develop as a person ages. They are commonly found on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, and shoulders. Age spots are typically harmless, but their appearance can be bothersome to some individuals. These spots occur due to an increase in melanin production, which is pigment the pigment responsible for the color of our skin. Although they are often associated with aging, age spots can also develop as a result of sun exposure, genetics, or hormonal changes. Various treatments and preventative measures can help fade or diminish the appearance of age spots.
