Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) are neuromodulators used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily reduce the appearance of dynamic facial wrinkles. These injectable treatments work by blocking nerve signals to targeted muscles, resulting in reduced muscle activity and a smoother appearance of the overlying skin.
Common treatment areas include the glabellar lines (frown lines between the brows), horizontal forehead lines, and lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet). Results typically begin to appear within 3 to 7 days, with full effect reached at around 2 weeks. Effects generally last between 3 to 4 months, depending on individual response and treatment area.
Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved and widely studied. While they are similar in mechanism and outcome, they differ slightly in onset, diffusion, and dosing. The choice between the two will be based on individual anatomy, goals, and clinical judgment during consultation.
