Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common condition that affects the nails, usually of the toes, but occasionally the fingers. It is caused by an overgrowth of fungi, such as dermatophytes, yeasts, or molds. The fungus thrives in environments that are warm and damp, making area s like public swimming pools, communal showers, and sweaty shoes are ideal breeding grounds. When the fungus invades the nail bed, it can cause the nail to become discolored, thickened, brittle, and distorted. It may also lead to discomfort, pain, and a foul odor. Nail fungus can be challenging to eliminate, often requiring long term treatment with antifungal medication or topical solutions.
